Classes > Oil Painting

6 Saturdays, 12-3pm

Learn all the steps for creating a realistic still life oil painting using a layered method, also called Flemish Technique.

Starting with a smooth wood painting panel (provided by instructor), the painting is developed with as many as 5-7 layers of very thin paint.

After a careful drawing, we paint two layers of refined monochromatic underpainting before several layers of color painting. Glazing and finishing are the final stage. This layered technique gives the artist incredible control over the paint, for achieving effects of stunning realism.

Artist who study this method find that they learn to see more precise and subtle values and colors, bringing a higher level of accuracy to any painting method they choose to pursue.

Working from a simple still life of a single egg, students will create a small painting that takes them through all the steps for creating a realistic, layered oil painting.

A brown egg lit by a single light source provides all of the challenges of light, form, and color, without complication, making it the ideal subject for learning this refined and subtle technique.

Oil Painting II: Advanced Techniques

Please Note:

Oil Painting II: Advanced Techniques is no longer offered as a class, and is offered as semi-private lessons to students enrolled in Advanced Open Studio. This gives students enough time to complete a painting.

The following techniques and principles are presented in Advanced Open Studio, for students who have completed Oil Painting I:

Composition and Drawing
Essential theories for composing a successful picture, starting with thumbnail sketches and then developing a detailed drawing to be transferred to the painting panel. Additional drawing exercises done in class and at home build on the concepts covered in Drawing Fundamentals.

Value and Color
Controlling Hue, Value, and Chroma to accurately depict realistic color. Understanding how transparent and opaque paints affect color mixing. Builds on the basic color theory introduced in Oil I.

Layering and Glazing
Using thin layers of transparent and opaque paint for the most believable realism and a refined finish.

Transparency and Reflection
Techniques for depicting transparent (clear) and reflective (metallic) objects.

Materials
In-depth review of materials: paint, supports, brushes, solvents, mediums, varnish
