10-Day Drawing and Painting Workshop

10 Weekdays, 10am-4:30pm

This intensive 10-day course is a complete overview of the fundamental drawing and painting principles used by classically trained instructor Sadie Valeri to create her award-winning still-life paintings.

The class is designed for all levels. Beginners will receive a solid, manageable introduction. Experienced artists will learn refined techniques for depicting highly believable realism.

The workshop offers detailed technical information about Sadie’s painting and drawing techniques, documented extensively in notes and handouts. Sadie believes in plenty of hands-on instruction, and spends significant time each day with each student at their easel, offering individual instruction and demonstrations.

Attendees can expect an immersive experience that will leave them inspired and motivated to continue on their own. Take-home exercises can easily fuel a year of self-study.

Covered in this workshop:

Drawing

  • Drawing organic, natural form
  • Understanding drapery and crumpled paper
  • Creating believable man-made objects (vessels)
  • Designing effective compositions
  • Understanding value (light and dark)
  • Refined techniques for rendering with graphite pencil

Value
The layered oil painting technique starts with a monochromatic (brown or gray) underpainting to establish light and dark. A successful painting depends on a solid understanding of value.

Color
Controlling Hue, Value, and Chroma, and understanding the properties of transparent and opaque pigments is essential for accurately depicting realistic color.

Layering and Glazing
Using thin layers of transparent and opaque paint for the most believable realism and a refined finish.

Transparency and Reflection
Techniques for depicting transparent (clear) and reflective (metallic) objects.

Materials
In-depth review of materials: paint, supports, brushes, solvents, mediums, varnish

Student quote:
“Thank you for all your great instruction, encouragement, and generously sharing your process. You pushed us to break through to higher levels of close observation and control of materials. It’s inspiring to have a teacher that freely admits that she herself has struggled, and continues to study and refine her art. Any pursuit worth doing is not easy, and I see why students, without the proper guidance in their development, will flounder and give up, thinking they’re not talented. I have the tools and the discipline now to continue to improve and mark my progress.”
